Korean pop culture, in numbers

Is it actually Korean?

Netflix’s weekly top 10 files give a title, a country, a week and a rank. They do not give a year, a director, or a country of production. So when a chart says “Little Women” or “The Glory”, the row itself cannot tell anyone which work that is — and every site counting “Korean titles on Netflix”, ours included, is making an inference at that point.

We check each of our 974 names against Wikidata: which countries have a film or series carrying exactly this English label? 525 names are carried only by Korean works — those cannot be confused. 423 are carried by works from more than one country, which is 43% of everything we publish figures for.

The four answers, counted

What Wikidata says about the nameTitlesShare
Only Korean works carry it — cannot be confused52554%
Works from more than one country carry it — the row alone cannot say which42343%
No Korean work is listed under this name at all111%
Wikidata has no usable entry — unmeasured, not foreign152%

Shared does not mean wrong. Most shared names are almost certainly the Korean work — a Korean series charting across Asia in the week it aired is not going to be a 1994 American film of the same name. Shared means the row on its own cannot prove it, and we would rather you knew which figures rest on an inference.

The 41 where our figures may be wrong

For these, Wikidata lists no Korean work at all under the name. Either Wikidata is incomplete, or we have counted another country’s work as Korean. We publish the list rather than quietly dropping the rows, because dropping them would make our totals look cleaner than they are.

If you know which work any of these rows belongs to, tell us and it goes on corrections with the date. That is the whole mechanism: we are not able to resolve these from the data alone, and pretending otherwise would be the dishonest option.

This says nothing about either country’s output. English titles are short and reuse the same few hundred words, so the countries that make the most English-labelled work collide with everyone, Korea included.

Titles we hold but have not checked yet

These have a Wikidata entry keyed to them but no country check completed. They are counted as unmeasured on this page, not as Korean and not as foreign.

What this page cannot answer

14 seconds, with sound

Fourteen seconds, read aloud: a Netflix chart row carries a title, a country, a week and a rank, and nothing else. For 423 of our 974 titles another country carries a work with the same English name, so the row alone cannot say which work charted. For 41 of them Wikidata lists no Korean work at all, and we publish that list rather than drop the rows. Free to repost with the address on it.

How this was measured

Every title we count is asked of Wikidata: which countries produced a film or TV series with exactly this English label. A title only Korean works carry cannot be mismatched by our title-text rule. A shared title means we cannot tell from the text alone which work charted — it does not mean the entry is wrong. Chart places come from Netflix's own weekly top 10 files by country, 2021-07-04 to 2026-08-23, across 93 countries. A title is counted here once, however many countries and weeks it charted in.

What this cannot tell you

Wikidata's country of origin field records co-producers and rights holders as well as the country a work was made in, so a country listed against a name is not a production credit and we do not present it as one. Wikidata is also incomplete and edited by volunteers, so a name it does not carry may still exist. Where Wikidata has no usable entry we count the title as unmeasured — never as foreign, never as Korean. None of this resolves which work actually charted: Netflix publishes a name and a rank and nothing that would settle it.
