K Culture Wire counts what public datasets already publish about Korean pop culture, names every source, and states what it left out. It does not report rumours, reprint press releases, or rank anything it cannot show the arithmetic for.
What this site is
Korean drama, film, music and esports are followed closely across Southeast Asia and the wider English-speaking world, but almost everything written about them in English is either translated gossip or a repackaged press release. Meanwhile the numbers that would settle most arguments — how many countries a title actually charted in, how many hours it was actually watched, how many people actually look a performer up — are published openly and read by almost nobody.
That gap is the whole idea. We take feeds that are already public, count them the same way every week, and publish the count with its source attached.
K Culture Wire is not a registered news outlet. It is a data publication operated by the company named at the foot of this page. We do not employ reporters, we do not conduct interviews, and we do not claim press credentials or the access that comes with them. Everything here is derived from datasets anyone can download.
Where each number comes from
Every figure on this site traces to one of four sources. There are no others.
Netflix Top 10 (Tudum) — the official weekly TSV releases covering 94 countries and every week since July 2021. Netflix publishes hours viewed and country rank itself; we do not estimate either. netflix.com/tudum/top10 We measured both of those files column by column, including the two things they do not tell you: what is inside them, and what is missing from them. If you came here looking for one particular week rather than the files, every week is listed separately.
Wikidata — country of origin (property P495), cast member (P161) and country of citizenship (P27). This is what tells us a title is a Korean production and a performer is Korean, rather than us deciding it. query.wikidata.org
Wikimedia Pageviews API — daily English Wikipedia article views, human traffic only, automated and spider traffic excluded by the API itself. wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1
Riot Games API — ranked ladder counts across six regions, collected once a day under a registered application. A ladder cannot be reconstructed after the fact, so a day we fail to collect is simply missing and we say so rather than interpolating.
All four are used within their published terms. We do not scrape sites that disallow it, we do not resell any feed, and we do not republish a source's data table wholesale — what we publish is a count derived from it.
How we decide something is Korean
This decides what appears on the site, so it should not be a judgement call. It is not one. A title counts as a Korean production when Wikidata's country-of-origin field lists South Korea; a performer counts as Korean when the country-of-citizenship field says so.
Two consequences worth knowing. International co-productions that list Korea alongside other countries are included — Snowpiercer and Mickey 17 both qualify. And because cast lists on those titles include performers of every nationality, the citizenship filter is applied separately at the performer level; without it, an actor ranking built from Korean films fills up with people who are not Korean. We found exactly that in our first roster and corrected it, which cut the list from 1,553 names to 1,344.
Where a title has no Wikidata entry, it is absent rather than guessed at. That biases the list slightly toward well-documented titles, and we would rather have that bias visible than fix it by hand.
What the numbers do not mean
Attention is not popularity. A Wikipedia page climbs for good news and bad — an award, a casting, a scandal, a death. We publish the count and the window it covers. We do not publish a reason, because the count does not contain one.
Hours viewed is not quality, and not audience size either. A long series accumulates hours a film cannot. We report the figure Netflix publishes and label it.
Netflix is not streaming. No other service publishes a comparable weekly ranking, so a title absent here may simply be somewhere else. Broadcast ratings are a separate measurement system and are not mixed in.
A missing performer is not an unpopular one. Anyone without an English Wikipedia article cannot be measured by pageviews at all. The front page states how many of our roster that affects.
Photographs
We do not publish agency, label or studio photographs. Korean outlets routinely use officially distributed press images, but that practice rests on being a registered press organisation, and we are not one yet. Rather than borrow a permission we do not hold, the graphics on this site are built from our own counts — charts we made, of numbers we calculated, which nobody else owns.
Corrections
If a number here is wrong we want to know, and a correction is cheap because every figure has a named source you can check against us. Write to cs@klifedesign.net. Substantive corrections are made in place with a visible date. We do not quietly rewrite published figures.
