IU's Debut Anniversary Donation Landed After a Week of Rising Wikipedia Reads
IU marked her 18 September debut anniversary with a 200 million won donation as 'IUaena,' bringing this year's giving to 600 million won. Her English Wikipedia reading had already risen the week before — we can't tie it to today's news.
The table this is written from: /what-moves-english-reading
IU marked her 18 September debut anniversary with a 200 million won donation split across four organisations, given under the fan-tribute name “IUaena” — a combination of her own name and her fandom, Uaena. Maeil Business Newspaper reported the total for the year, including this gift, at 600 million won.
We can’t yet check what the announcement itself did to her English Wikipedia reading — Wikimedia’s pageviews API had not published 18 September’s numbers as of this writing.
What we can check is the run-up. Over the eight days ending 17 September, IU’s page averaged 2,297 views a day, about 19% above the 1,933 average of the 22 days before that. The single day before the announcement, 17 September, came in at 2,099 views — 1.08 times her fuller 30-day baseline, a mild reading rather than a spike.
We’re not attaching either number to today’s donation. The rise started roughly a week before the announcement, which is too early for it to be a reaction to news that hadn’t broken yet, and we found no other single event in our own sources that explains it. It stays in the record as unexplained. We will check 18 September itself once the data allows.

What we checked
- 30-day baseline (19 August-17 September 2026, excluding 17 September itself): IU averaged 1,937 English Wikipedia views a day.
- 17 September, the day before the donation was announced: 2,099 views, 1.08x that baseline — mild, not sharp.
- The eight days ending 17 September (10-17 September) averaged 2,297 views, about 19% above the 22 days before them (1,933). The rise predates the donation announcement by a week.
What we left out, and why
- 18 September itself, the day the donation was actually announced. Wikimedia's pageviews API had not yet published that day's data as of this writing.
- A causal link between the donation and either the mild 17 September reading or the week-long rise before it. The rise started too early to be a reaction to news that broke on the 18th, and we found no other single news item explaining it — it goes in the record as unexplained, not attributed.
- The donation total itself as something we measured. 600 million won this year, and 200 million won for this specific anniversary, are figures reported by Maeil Business Newspaper; we did not independently verify amounts with the recipient organisations.
