The Day IU's Donation Made News, Her Wikipedia Reading Didn't Move at All
We couldn't check 18 September's reaction to IU's debut-anniversary donation when we first wrote about it. Now we can — and the announcement day read exactly like the elevated week before it, not higher.

We wrote yesterday that IU’s 18 September debut-anniversary donation — 200 million won under the fan-tribute name “IUaena,” bringing her total giving this year to 600 million won per Maeil Business Newspaper — had landed in the middle of a reading rise that started roughly a week earlier, and that we couldn’t yet check what the announcement day itself did, because Wikimedia’s pageviews API hadn’t published 18 September’s numbers.
It has now. The number is 2,101 views on her English Wikipedia page — 1.08 times the 1,937-view baseline we calculated from the 30 days before. That’s the same ratio, to two decimal places, as 17 September, the day before the news broke: 2,099 views, also 1.08x. The two days are two views apart.
The announcement did not lift her reading above where the pre-existing rise had already put it. Whatever moved English-language Wikipedia readers to look her up more over the past two weeks, it wasn’t this specific piece of news — the day it broke reads identically to the day before it.

- 30-day baseline (19 August-17 September 2026, excluding 17 September itself): 1,937 views a day — the same baseline we set in our earlier piece on this donation.
- 17 September (the day before the announcement): 2,099 views, 1.08x baseline.
- 18 September (the day the donation was actually reported): 2,101 views, 1.08x baseline — two views different from the day before it.
What we left out, and why
- Any reading of this as proof the donation had zero effect anywhere. We measure one audience — English Wikipedia readers — over one day. A Korean-language news cycle can move other things we don't count.
- A cause for the week-long rise that started before the announcement. We flagged it as unexplained in our earlier piece and it remains unexplained here.
