Crash Landing on You: 72 weeks in Japan's top 10

It is the longest any Korean title has spent in one country's Netflix top 10. The 72 weeks are spread across 96 weeks of calendar, and the longest unbroken run inside them is 53. Squid Game's 43 weeks in India span 201.

Crash Landing on You held a place in Japan’s Netflix series top 10 for 72 weeks. No Korean title has spent longer in any single country’s top 10 in the five years Netflix has been publishing these lists.

Two numbers have to sit beside that one or it says something untrue.

The 72 weeks are spread across a 96-week stretch of calendar — from the first week we hold, 2021-07-04, to 2023-04-30. And the longest unbroken run inside them is 53 weeks. So it left the chart, came back, and left again; it was not there for a year and a half straight.

The ten longest, with the span beside them

Korean title Country Weeks in top 10 Weeks it spans Longest unbroken
Crash Landing on You Japan 72 96 53
Itaewon Class Japan 64 71 24
Boys Over Flowers Bolivia 49 51 35
Vincenzo Pakistan 45 53 25
Squid Game India 43 201 25
Alchemy of Souls Thailand 42 45 29
Squid Game Pakistan 39 202 19
Reply 1988 Vietnam 39 76 15
Squid Game Bangladesh 37 201 17
Alchemy of Souls Nigeria 37 38 36

Read the last two columns against the first and the table splits in two.

Itaewon Class in Japan, Boys Over Flowers in Bolivia and Alchemy of Souls in Nigeria are essentially continuous: the span barely exceeds the count. Nigeria’s 37 weeks sit inside a 38-week window.

Squid Game in India is the opposite. Its 43 weeks are spread over 201 weeks — nearly four years, from September 2021 to July 2025. Twenty-five of them are unbroken; the other eighteen are scattered across the years that followed. A sentence that turned that into “43 straight weeks in India’s top 10” would be describing something that did not happen.

Why the two Japanese titles are at the top

Crash Landing on You and Itaewon Class both reach these numbers in Japan, and both are from 2019–2020 — they were old shows by the time this window opens. That is the shape of the Japanese chart in this data rather than a fact about those two shows: Japan’s series list turns over slowly, and a Korean title that gets into it tends to stay near it for a long time.

We are not going to explain why Japan behaves that way. Release timing, licensing, how much else Netflix Japan puts out in a week and how many people are watching would all produce the same pattern, and the file cannot separate them.

The largest counter in the whole file is not Korean

It is Lottie Dottie Chicken — a Brazilian children’s title — at 133 weeks in Brazil, spread over 166 with an unbroken run of 82. Children’s titles sit at the top of this particular measure in most countries, because they are watched again and again rather than watched once.

That is worth knowing before treating a long counter as a mark of impact. The field rewards being re-watched, not being talked about.

The number this article is built on needs reading carefully

The weeks-in-top-10 field is a cumulative count, not a streak: on consecutive weeks it adds exactly one, and after a gap it keeps counting 98% of the time rather than restarting. We measured that separately, and it is the reason every span and streak in the table above is computed by us from the weeks themselves.

One more limit, and it cuts against the headline: our window opens on 2021-07-04, the first week Netflix published these lists. Every counter in the file starts at 1 there. Crash Landing on You was released in December 2019, so if it was in Japan’s top 10 before July 2021 — and it very likely was — those weeks are not in the 72. The figure is a floor, not a total.

Every counter, span and streak, with the row counts behind them, is on the weeks-counter page.
