BTS opened the Latin American leg of the Arirang World Tour in Bogotá on 2 October. Since then, something has happened on Wikipedia that did not happen once from March to September: more people have read the BTS article in Spanish than in English.

Seven days in October

Date Tour stop that week Spanish reads English reads
3 Oct Bogotá (2nd night) 6,978 5,334
4 Oct Bogotá (day after) 5,656 5,367
7 Oct Lima (1st night) 5,015 4,601
8 Oct Lima 5,666 4,660
15 Oct Santiago (day after 1st night) 4,407 4,224
21 Oct La Plata / Buenos Aires (1st night) 4,555 4,242
22 Oct La Plata / Buenos Aires 6,512 4,412

On 22 October, the day after the first Buenos Aires-area show, the Spanish article was read 1.48 times as often as the English one.

What normal looks like

Spanish is not a small audience for BTS. In September we found that Spanish Wikipedia is the most-read edition for six of the seven members’ own articles. But for the group article, English has been far ahead all year.

Period Spanish reads English reads Spanish per English read
August–September 56,488 442,803 0.13
1–22 October 89,371 102,277 0.87

The year’s biggest days show the usual pattern. On 21 March, Spanish Wikipedia read BTS 12,972 times and English 71,794. On 19 July, Spanish recorded its busiest day of the year, 17,985, and English 96,360, more than five times as many. Global news days lift both, and English stays far ahead.

What changed in October

Two things moved together. Spanish reads rose: the October median is 3,728 a day, against 865 in September. English reads fell: from a median of 8,444 a day in August to 4,601 in October. The tour pushed Spanish up; we did not test why English went down.

The May shows in Mexico City came close to the same crossing without making it. On 7 May, the first Mexico City night, Spanish reached 11,694 against English 12,554.

Next: São Paulo

The leg ends with three shows in São Paulo on 28, 30 and 31 October. Portuguese Wikipedia has read BTS between 372 and 712 times a day (monthly median) since March, less than a tenth of English. Whether the Brazilian shows move it the way the Spanish-speaking stops moved Spanish, the daily numbers will show.

What this does and does not say

Wikipedia counts reads by language, not by country. Spanish Wikipedia readers include Spain and the large Spanish-speaking audience in the United States. These figures show when Spanish-language interest in BTS rose and by how much. They do not show how many people went to the shows.

What we left out, and why

  • Where the readers are. Wikipedia counts reads by language edition, not by country; Spanish Wikipedia is read in Spain and the United States as well as Latin America.
  • Why English reads fell from September. We did not test it.
  • 23 and 24 October, not yet published by Wikimedia when we wrote.
  • Ticket sales and attendance for the Latin American shows, which the tour's Wikipedia article does not yet list.
