BTS Passed Olivia Rodrigo on Spotify. English Wikipedia Reading Went the Other Way.

Korean press reported this week that BTS's 'Arirang' topped Olivia Rodrigo's Spotify streaming total. We measured English Wikipedia reads for both acts over the same 44 days. BTS's fell 18%. Rodrigo's rose 28%.

Korean press this week reported that BTS’s 2026 single “Arirang” had passed 5 billion streams on Spotify and moved the group past Olivia Rodrigo for the platform’s top streaming spot. It is the kind of number that is built to travel — round, comparative, and framed as a win over a specific rival.

We did not re-run Spotify’s numbers; we have no way to. What we can measure independently is a different kind of attention: how many people opened each artist’s English Wikipedia page, every day, over the same stretch the streaming story broke in.

The same 44 days, read the other way

BTS Olivia Rodrigo
Median daily reads, full window 5,159 11,932
Median daily reads, first 22 days 6,004 9,806
Median daily reads, last 22 days 4,934 12,553
Change, first half to second half −18% +28%

Rodrigo’s reading rose through the same window BTS is reported to have overtaken her streaming total. BTS’s fell.

It is not a close call in the final week

Day (most recent 7) BTS Olivia Rodrigo
1 4,660 13,761
2 4,928 12,109
3 4,876 24,974
4 4,856 18,938
5 4,589 13,966
6 4,712 12,500
7 4,376 10,579

Rodrigo’s single biggest day in this stretch (24,974) is more than five times BTS’s biggest day in the same seven days (4,928).

BTS was already higher before any of this

Reading further back, BTS’s own median over the 63 days before our measurement window (1 July to 1 September 2026) was 7,959 — above both halves of the period we measured here. The decline is not a one-week dip against Rodrigo specifically; by this measure, interest in BTS on English Wikipedia has been easing for months.

What this does and does not say

A streaming total and a Wikipedia page view answer different questions. One counts plays on a platform where catalogue depth, playlists and years of back-catalogue streams accumulate; the other counts people who, that day, chose to open an encyclopedia page. A group can lead on one and trail on the other without either number being wrong.

What we can say is narrow: whatever is driving BTS’s reported Spotify milestone this week, it has not shown up as rising English-language reference-lookup interest. By that specific measure, the two curves are moving in opposite directions.

English Wikipedia pageviews, all-access, user traffic only (bots excluded), daily, 1 September to 14 October 2026; measured 15 October 2026. Medians, not means, so a single viral day does not carry the whole window. The Spotify figure is attributed to the cited press report and was not independently recomputed.

What we checked

  • Median daily English Wikipedia reads over the full 44-day window: BTS 5,159; Olivia Rodrigo 11,932.
  • Split the window in half. First 22 days median: BTS 6,004, Rodrigo 9,806. Last 22 days median: BTS 4,934 (down 18%), Rodrigo 12,553 (up 28%).
  • Last 7 days of the window, BTS: 4,660 / 4,928 / 4,876 / 4,856 / 4,589 / 4,712 / 4,376.
  • Last 7 days of the window, Rodrigo: 13,761 / 12,109 / 24,974 / 18,938 / 13,966 / 12,500 / 10,579 — including one day at roughly five times BTS's best day in the same week.
  • A wider baseline: BTS's median daily reads in the 63 days before this window (1 Jul–1 Sep 2026) was 7,959 — higher than either half of the window we measured here.

What we left out, and why

  • The Spotify stream count itself. We did not verify the 5-billion figure or the head-to-head ranking against Rodrigo; we are citing the press report, not recomputing Spotify's data.
  • Why BTS's reading fell or Rodrigo's rose. A pageview series does not carry a reason — tour dates, release cycles and unrelated news all move this number, and we did not match either curve against an event calendar.
  • Readership inside Korea. English Wikipedia counts English-language readers; it is one audience, not a global total.
  • A page view is not a stream, a purchase or a vote. The two measurements answer different questions and we are not converting one into the other.
