BTS Set a 9-Billion-Stream Spotify Record. English Wikipedia Reading Hit a Month-Low the Day Before.
STARNEWS reported BTS passed 9 billion Spotify streams in a year, first for an Asian act. Wikimedia has no data yet for that day, but the 10 days before it read at 0.70x the 10 days before that.

BTS became the first Asian act in history to pass 9 billion Spotify streams within a single calendar year, STARNEWS reported on 18 September 2026 — breaking the group’s own previous record of 8.65 billion, set in 2021, for the second time in two weeks. All 149 of the group’s tracks have individually passed 100 million cumulative streams, a feat STARNEWS says no other group in Spotify’s history has matched.
We hold English Wikipedia pageviews, not streaming data, so we can’t independently check the stream count. What we can check is what happened to how often people looked BTS up on English Wikipedia in the weeks leading into that report.
What we measured
We pulled BTS’s daily English Wikipedia pageviews for the 29 days ending 17 September 2026 — the freshest complete window Wikimedia’s API had at the time of writing. The record was reported on 18 September, a day our pageview data doesn’t cover yet.
| Average views/day | |
|---|---|
| 20-29 August | 8,257 |
| 8-17 September | 5,763 (0.70x) |
Reading fell fairly steadily across the window: 17 September, the last day we can measure, was the single lowest day of the entire 29 days, at 4,925 views — 40% below where the window started.
What we can’t say yet
We can’t check whether the 9-billion-stream report itself moved reading on 18 September, because Wikimedia hasn’t published that day’s numbers yet. If reading jumped on the day the record was announced, our next update will show it. What the data through 17 September shows is a readership in decline running into that announcement, not building toward it.

What we checked
- First 10 days of our window (20-29 August 2026): BTS's English Wikipedia page averaged 8,257 views a day.
- Last 10 days before the record was reported (8-17 September 2026): the page averaged 5,763 views a day, 0.70x the earlier ten-day average.
- 17 September, the last day our data covers: 4,925 views — the single lowest day in the entire 29-day window.
What we left out, and why
- 18 September itself, the day the record was reported. Wikimedia's pageviews API has not published that day's data yet as of writing; its usual lag is 1-2 days. We are not estimating it.
- Spotify's own stream count, which comes from Spotify's platform, not our measurement.
- Any claim that falling Wikipedia reading means falling interest in BTS overall. Streaming and Wikipedia lookups measure different behaviors — one is repeat listening, the other is looking something up.
