Katseye Lost Best K-Pop at the VMAs — and Outread the Winner 20 to 1
BTS won Best K-Pop at the 2026 VMAs on 27 September. That day, BTS's English Wikipedia article was read 5,152 times — not enough to crack the world's top 1,000. Katseye, who lost, was read 106,190 times: world rank 21.
BTS won Best K-Pop at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on 27 September, for “SWIM.” Katseye — nominated in the same category for “PINKY UP,” alongside three other nominations — lost both Best K-Pop and Best Choreography that night. By one measure, Katseye still had the bigger day.
The winner’s readership didn’t move
BTS’s English Wikipedia article was read between 4,736 and 5,578 times a day, every day, from 20 through 26 September. On 27 September — award night — it was read 5,152 times: a number that falls inside the same range as any ordinary day that week. It didn’t rank among the 1,000 most-read English Wikipedia articles that day.

The loser’s readership went to world rank 21
Katseye’s article ran 15,000–20,000 reads a day over the same week — already several times BTS’s range. On 27 September it jumped to 106,190 reads, a roughly 6-times spike over its own prior-week average, and world rank 21 of every article on English Wikipedia that day, out of roughly six million.
That is a 20-to-1 gap in same-day reads between the group that lost the category and the group that won it.
Forbes had flagged Katseye’s Best K-Pop nomination as an unusual one before the ceremony: the group sings entirely in English and isn’t a Korean-industry act the way its fellow nominees are. Whatever readers were looking up on 27 September, it wasn’t the outcome — Katseye lost.
This compares two articles’ English Wikipedia reads on the same day, using the same data source. It says something about which name more people looked up that day — not about which act is bigger, more talented, or more deserving of an award it didn’t win.

- Katseye's article ('Katseye', no redirect) ran 15,140 to 20,492 reads a day over the same prior week. On 27 September it was read 106,190 times — world rank 21 of every English Wikipedia article that day, out of roughly six million.
- Katseye received four 2026 VMA nominations, including Best K-Pop for 'PINKY UP' — a nomination Forbes noted as unusual, since the group sings entirely in English and is not a Korean-industry act in the way the rest of the category's nominees are. What we left out, and why
- Why BTS's reading held flat while Katseye's spiked. Wikipedia does not record intent, and we did not substitute a guess — an established act's readership may simply already sit near its ceiling on an ordinary week, while a newer act's does not.
- Any claim that Katseye deserved to win, or that reading volume should decide an award. This is a count of encyclopedia lookups, not a measure of music quality or fan devotion.
- Whether the same gap holds on other language editions of Wikipedia, or on any platform besides Wikipedia. We measured English Wikipedia only.
