BTS Jin's Gucci week moved nothing. A birthday moved 1.35x
Korean pages carried four Jin stories in one day, one calling him the most-searched person in the world for Gucci. We cannot count Google searches, so we counted English Wikipedia reads against his own bandmates.
The table this is written from: /what-moves-english-reading
Korean entertainment pages carried four separate items about BTS’s Jin on 6 September. One of them reported that Gucci’s Primavera campaign had made him the most-searched person in the world.
We have no way to count Google searches, and repeating a figure we cannot check is not something we do. But there is one number we can count exactly: how many people opened his English Wikipedia article.
The method is the bandmates
Measuring one person alone is how ordinary drift gets reported as an event. If everyone in a group is read less in a given week, nothing happened to the one you were watching.
So each event is measured twice — the person, and the rest of BTS over the same days. What matters is what is left over.
Jin, the week of the Gucci campaign
| Seven days before | 1,958 a day |
| Seven days from 25 August | 1,794 a day |
| His own change | 0.92× |
| Bandmates, same weeks | 0.91× |
| Left over | 1.01× |
His reading fell about 8%. So did everyone else’s — RM 0.90, Suga 0.87, J-Hope 0.90, Jimin 0.95, V 0.91. Once that is accounted for, the campaign week leaves 1.01×.
Nothing.
Jung Kook, the week of his birthday
| Seven days before | 3,758 a day |
| Seven days from 1 September | 5,043 a day |
| On the day itself | 7,996 |
| His own change | 1.34× |
| Bandmates, same weeks | 0.99× |
| Left over | 1.35× |
He turned 29 on the night BTS opened four shows at SoFi Stadium, and the band sang happy birthday on stage. On the day, his article was opened 7,996 times against 3,758 a day the week before — 2.1 times the ordinary rate — while the rest of the group sat flat at 0.99.
What the two together say
A global luxury campaign, reported in Korea in the largest possible terms, left no trace we can measure. A birthday left a clear one.
We are not saying the campaign failed. A sold-out $9,900 jacket and an encyclopedia page open are different things, and only the second is ours to count. What the pair does show is narrower and worth holding on to: a superlative in a headline and a measurable rise are not the same object, and only one of them can be checked.
Both events, with every control figure and the ones we dropped, are here.
One thing we had to fix mid-count
Our first pass put Jung Kook in Jin’s control group. His birthday falls inside Jin’s window, so his 1.34× dragged the control average up to 0.98 and made Jin look like he had fallen behind his bandmates. He had not. A control with an event of its own inside the window is not a control, so he is dropped and named on the page rather than quietly removed.
Counted from English Wikipedia page views. Not searches, not reach, and not proof that any event caused any change.

What we checked
- Every event is measured twice, once for the person and once for the rest of their group over the same days. A figure with no control behind it is not published here
- A control with an event of their own inside the window is dropped and named. Jung Kook was dropped from Jin's controls because his birthday falls inside Jin's window, and Jin from Jung Kook's for the same reason
- We do not count Google searches and never repeat a most-searched claim as though we had measured it
- A change under 5% is recorded as no change rather than as a small move, so ordinary noise is not reported as an effect
- Two events is a small sample and is described as two events, not as a pattern about campaigns or birthdays in general
