NCT 127 and BigBang doubled their readers — 3.6x and 2.7x
Of the sixteen groups with more than 20,000 English Wikipedia opens in our window, exactly two rose by more than a third. NCT 127 multiplied further; BigBang added more readers. We do not know why either happened.
The table this is written from: /kpop-attention
Between 24 July and 15 August, BigBang’s English Wikipedia page was opened about 1,321 times a day. In the seven days that followed it was opened 3,536 times a day — 2.7 times as often. NCT 127 went further still, from 452 a day to 1,621: 3.6 times.
Those two are the whole story. Of the sixteen K-pop groups with more than 20,000 opens across the window, nobody else even added a half.
| Act | 23 days before | Last 7 days | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCT 127 | 452/day | 1,621/day | 3.59× |
| BigBang | 1,321/day | 3,536/day | 2.68× |
| Illit | 1,586/day | 2,093/day | 1.32× |
| Stray Kids | 2,525/day | 2,748/day | 1.09× |
| Blackpink | 4,429/day | 4,731/day | 1.07× |
| Twice | 1,951/day | 1,633/day | 0.84× |
| Seventeen | 1,722/day | 1,110/day | 0.64× |
BigBang is not the fastest riser. NCT 127 is, at 3.59× — and it did that from a much smaller base, 452 opens a day against BigBang’s 1,321. The two facts sit side by side and neither cancels the other: NCT 127 multiplied further, BigBang added more readers. Of the sixteen groups above 20,000 opens in the window, those two are the only ones that even doubled. Everything else is inside a third either way.
We do not know why, and we are not going to guess
This is a count of one thing: an encyclopaedia page being opened. A comeback, a rumour, a television rerun, an anniversary and a piece of bad news all look exactly the same in this data. Wikipedia records the open and nothing else. Anybody who tells you the cause from a pageview chart is telling you a story, not a measurement.
What we can say is that the movement is real and it is not a rounding artefact. The two periods do not overlap — the last seven days are set against the twenty-three days before them, not against the thirty-day total that contains them, which would have flattened the rise to 1.9×. And only acts with at least 20,000 opens across the window are ranked, so nothing here is a small number pretending to be a trend.
What a number like this is good for
Not for deciding who is popular. BigBang is still only ninth on the list by total opens, and NCT 127 — the fastest riser of the two — does not reach the top fifteen at all. Twice, which fell over the same week, is eighth. Speed and size are different questions, and a single ranking answers neither on its own.
It is good for one thing: telling you where to go and look. Something happened around BigBang in the third week of August, in English, outside Korea. Our data marks the spot on the map. It does not say what is there.

What we checked
- The two periods do not overlap. The last seven days are compared against the twenty-three days before them, not against the thirty-day total that contains them — comparing a part against a whole containing it would flatten every rise.
- Only acts with at least 20,000 opens across the window are ranked by movement, so a page going from 30 opens to 90 does not top the list on a rounding difference.
What we left out, and why
- Why. Wikipedia records no reason for a page being opened, and we did not look for one. A comeback, a rumour, a television rerun and a death all look identical in this data.
- Popularity, sales, streams and listeners. This counts one thing: an English Wikipedia article being opened.
- Korean readers. This is the English edition only.
