Korean pop culture, in numbers

Stars

Dog Years Gave Us Suzy and Hyun Bin. Snake Years Gave Us Kim Woo-bin. The 27-Person Gap Between Them Is Noise.

We sorted 1,047 Korean actors who reached a Netflix chart by Chinese zodiac year. The most common sign has 103 of them and the rarest has 76 — and that spread is statistically indistinguishable from chance.

Here is a question people actually type into a search box: which Korean stars share my zodiac year? It is answerable, so we answered it — and then we checked whether the answer means anything.

The count

1,047 Korean actors who appeared in a title that reached a Netflix weekly top 10 have a date of birth recorded on Wikidata. Sorted by Chinese zodiac year:

Sign Actors
Dog 103
Rooster 92
Pig 92
Goat 91
Monkey 91
Dragon 90
Rat 89
Rabbit 86
Ox 82
Tiger 78
Horse 77
Snake 76

Dog years include Bae Suzy, Hyun Bin, Rain, Park Ji-hoon and Ju Ji-hoon. Snake years include Kim Woo-bin, So Ji-sub, Lee Jong-suk, Shin Hae-sun and Jung So-min.

The part most of these lists leave out

Dog has 27 more people than Snake. On a page that stopped here, that gap would read as a finding — the sign that produces stars, the sign that doesn’t.

It isn’t one. A chi-square test on this distribution returns 7.77 against a threshold of 19.68. In plain terms: if you handed 1,047 people out across twelve boxes completely at random, you would expect a spread about this uneven, routinely. Dog leading Snake by 27 is what randomness looks like, not what a pattern looks like.

Being born in one year rather than another does not pick out who reaches a chart. We measured it precisely so we could say that instead of implying the opposite by staying quiet.

What we cannot do, and will not fake

A proper saju needs four pillars, and the fourth is the hour of birth. Public profiles carry dates and almost never hours. That means we can count how a thousand actors are distributed across twelve years, and we cannot produce any one of their charts — not Suzy’s, not Kim Woo-bin’s, not anyone’s. Approximating the missing pillar would produce a reading that looks complete and is not, so there isn’t one here.

Two smaller limits, stated rather than buried. A sign assigned from the birth year alone is wrong for anyone born in January or February, because the lunar new year falls there; those people are dropped from the source data rather than guessed at. And 229 of the 1,047 have no readable pageview figures across the editions we track — they are unmeasured, which is not the same as zero.

So what is the list for

It answers the question that was asked — which stars share your year — and it declines to answer the question that wasn’t. If you were born in a Snake year, you share it with Kim Woo-bin and So Ji-sub. That is a fact about a calendar. It is not a fact about you.

What we checked

  • 1,047 Korean actors who reached a Netflix chart have a date of birth on Wikidata. Spread across the twelve zodiac years: Dog 103, Rooster 92, Pig 92, Goat 91, Monkey 91, Dragon 90, Rat 89, Rabbit 86, Ox 82, Tiger 78, Horse 77, Snake 76.
  • A chi-square test on that distribution returns 7.77 against a 19.68 threshold — the spread is indistinguishable from chance. Being born in one year rather than another does not pick out who reaches a chart.
  • 818 of the 1,047 have readable pageview figures across the four Southeast Asian editions we track; 229 do not and are counted as unmeasured.
  • Dog years include Bae Suzy, Park Ji-hoon, Hyun Bin, Rain and Ju Ji-hoon. Snake years include Kim Woo-bin, So Ji-sub, Lee Jong-suk, Shin Hae-sun and Jung So-min.

What we left out, and why

  • Any reading, forecast or judgement about a person. This counts how a thousand people are distributed; it does not interpret anyone's chart.
  • Saju proper. A full chart needs the hour of birth. Public profiles carry dates and almost never hours, so we can count the distribution and cannot produce a single person's chart — and we say so rather than approximating one.
  • Anyone born in January or February whose sign is ambiguous. The lunar new year falls in those months, so a birth year alone can assign the wrong sign; the source data drops them rather than guessing.
  • The 229 people with no readable pageview figures. They are unmeasured, not zero.
