Son Heung-min Made LAFC's Goal and Nearly Won the Game. Neither Shows Up in His Stat Line.

He drew the free kick that put LAFC ahead at Citi Field and hit the inside of the post with the last kick of the match. The box score records no goal and no assist. LAFC left New York with one point and sit sixth in the Western Conference.

Son Heung-min played ninety minutes at Citi Field on Friday night and finished with nothing in the box score. He also made the only goal his team scored and came within the width of a post of winning the match with its final kick.

Los Angeles FC drew 1-1 at New York City FC in a 2026 MLS regular-season fixture played on a baseball field. Citi Field is the home of the New York Mets; NYCFC, which has no permanent stadium of its own, converts it for home matches.

The goal he made but does not get credit for

Just before half-time Son carried the ball at the New York defence and was fouled by Aiden O’Neill roughly thirty yards from goal. Leo Walta, a 22-year-old Finland international who joined LAFC in late August, curled the free kick into the far corner. It was his first goal for the club.

In the official record Walta scored and no assist was given. The pass that produced the goal was a foul, and MLS does not credit the player who draws one. That is the first of two things Son did in this match that the scoresheet does not hold.

New York levelled in the 59th minute. Nicolas Fernandez Mercau swung a corner towards the near post and Andres Perea met it with a header.

The second thing the scoresheet does not hold

With the last kick of the match Son found space inside the box on the right and struck a right-footed shot that hit the inside of the post and bounced clear. A few centimetres the other way and LAFC take three points instead of one.

The difference between the two outcomes is one point in the table and nothing at all in his statistics.

Where it leaves both clubs

LAFC sit sixth in the Western Conference on 46 points. The direct first-round playoff place extends to seventh, so sixth is not yet safe. New York City FC dropped to eleventh in the Eastern Conference.

For Son the night fits a pattern that is easy to miss if you read only the numbers. He has been at LAFC since the summer, and the share of his work that appears as goals and assists is not the whole of it. On this night it was none of it.

What we checked

  • Kick-off was 17 October 2026 in New York, which is 18 October in Korea. Korean-language reports date the match 18 October; US reports date it 17 October. Same match.
  • The free-kick taker is spelled Walta in the LAFC club recap and in US match reports. Korean-language coverage renders the name as 발타, which transliterates back as Balta. This article follows the club's own spelling.
  • The equaliser came in the 59th minute, which Korean reports give as the 14th minute of the second half. Both describe the same goal.
  • Son Heung-min is not credited with a goal or an assist in this match. The foul he drew led to a free kick that another player converted, which MLS does not record as an assist.

What we left out, and why

  • Minute-by-minute possession, passing and distance figures were not published in the sources consulted, so no performance metrics beyond the goals are reported here.
