Star News publishes the running results of its STARPOLL fan vote. In the male idol category, the same name led every time we looked from mid-September: Sunghyun of Cortis. On 24 October that changed. His bandmate Keonho is now first.

One day, two members

23 October 24 October Change
Keonho (Cortis) 9,859 34,375 +24,516
Sunghyun (Cortis) 15,418 25,487 +10,069
Jin (BTS) 2,520 6,166 +3,646

In a single day Keonho’s fans added more than twice as many votes as Sunghyun’s and moved him from second to first. It is the only change of leader in any STARPOLL category across the six snapshots we have taken since 16 September.

Everyone else stayed put

Category Leader in all six snapshots
King of Kings Lim Young-woong
Male trot Park Seo-jin
Female trot Song Ga-in
Male actor Kim Soo-hyun
Female actor Kim Hye-yoon
Female idol Minji (NewJeans)
Male sports Lee Kang-in
Female sports Park Jeong-a

Outside the vote, interest in Cortis is falling

In the fan vote, Cortis members hold the top two male idol places. On English Wikipedia, where readers outside Korea look up a name, reading of the Cortis article has fallen month by month:

Month Cortis article, median daily reads
August 2,328
September 1,724
October (to the 22nd) 1,394

That is a fall of about 40% since August. Neither Keonho nor Sunghyun has an English Wikipedia article of his own under that name, so the group page is the only English entry for either.

What this does and does not say

A fan vote and a reading count measure different things. We found the same split for trot singers: the names Korea’s fans vote for hardest are often the ones least looked up in English. STARPOLL votes show how hard a fandom is pushing this week, not how many people follow an artist.

What we left out, and why

  • STARPOLL votes are a fan campaign: app users vote repeatedly, often in organised drives. They measure how hard fans push, not how many people follow an artist.
  • Vote totals fall between some snapshots, which suggests voting rounds restart; STARPOLL does not publish round dates, so we compare only within the same round (23 and 24 October).
  • Places below fifth, which the page does not publish without a login.
