Netflix's No. 1 Non-English Show, Doctor X, Is in the Top 10 of Every Asian Country We Track and 2 of 35 in Europe

In the week of 12 to 18 October, the most-watched non-English series on Netflix was a Korean one: Doctor X: Mafia in White, with 7.1 million views. Two more Korean shows were in the top four.

Yesterday we compared its views with Take Charge of My Heart’s hours. Netflix also publishes a top 10 for each of 95 countries. Those lists show where that No. 1 actually came from.

Where Doctor X charted

The two European countries were Portugal (9th) and Romania (8th). It did not chart in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain or Italy.

The four biggest non-English shows, side by side

The third-ranked show, The Trap, charted in 80 countries, more than any Korean series that week, and in all but one European country. It reached its views by being watched a little in many places. Doctor X got more views from fewer countries: it was very high where it charted, and absent in most of Europe.

The other Korean shows follow the same map. Take Charge of My Heart reached Europe further, in 15 countries, but was also missing from the United States and Canada. 100 Days of Deception, in its first full week on the global list, went from 3 countries to 22, all outside Europe and North America.

What this does and does not say

A country’s top 10 is a rank, not a count. Charting at No. 9 in a large market can mean more viewers than No. 1 in a small one, and Netflix does not publish views by country. What the lists show is how wide a show’s audience is, and where it is not. For Korean drama this week, the audience is wide across Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, and thin in Europe.
