What happened in episode 4

Liar follows two people who describe the same night in opposite ways: Min Jun-ho (Yoo Yeon-seok), a cardiac surgeon, and Kang Ji-seon (Seo Hyun-jin), a primary-school librarian teacher. The series is directed by Jo Young-min and written by Baek Jae-young.

Episode 4 explains why Kang was marked as lying in the lie-detector test. She had been involved in a similar case before and, afraid of being seen as someone who files complaints habitually, answered that question falsely. The person she had reported earlier leaked the story to the press and sent her threatening messages. She lost her job.

Kang decided she would rather fight than “just breathe like the dead,” and posted under her real name on the message board of a programme Min had appeared on. Min lost a surgery slot, and his son Min Hyun-su was hurt in a fight. Min shouted at her to stop the lies. She answered, “I can’t stop. It isn’t a lie.”

Police detective Lee Hwa-young (Ok Ja-yeon) warned Kang that Min was dangerous, and she treated Min strictly by the book when he approached her. Ten Asia noted that Min’s changed manner toward her fed viewers’ suspicion.

That night, someone entered Lee’s home while she slept alone. It was Min. The episode ended on his face in the dark.

What we can and cannot say

The only ratings we give are Nielsen Korea’s nationwide household figures. We found no peak-minute number for Liar this week, so none is shown. The ending points viewers toward Min, but the series has not confirmed anything, and we do not decide for it.

Liar airs Fridays and Saturdays at 9:50 pm KST on MBC, and a highlights special airs on MBC on 8 November at 1:20 pm.

What we checked

  • Liar episode 4, 7 November: 2.4% nationwide (Nielsen Korea), given by iZE, Joynews24 and Sports Today. Episode 3 was 2.2%; the rise is 0.2 percentage points.
  • Doctor X episode 10, same night: 17.7% nationwide (News1), up 2.4 points from 15.3% in episode 9. The two shows are 15.3 points apart.
  • The episode 4 plot is the same in the Joynews24, Ten Asia and iZE recaps: Kang's reason for the false answer, her named post, Min's loss of a surgery slot, and Min as the intruder at the end.

What we left out, and why

  • A peak-minute rating for Liar. We found none for episode 4, so we give none.
  • Streaming viewership. Neither Disney+ nor Wave publishes episode-level numbers.
  • Which of the two leads is telling the truth. The episode points toward Min, but the series has not settled it, and we do not call it.
  • Predictions for episode 5 or for the final rating.
